We had a full day tour of Fez, considered by some as the world's best example of a living medieval city. We visited Fez Jdid (New Fez), planned by the Merinids in the 13th century to incorporate the Royal Palace and Gardens and administrative center of the city. We visited the Jewish quarter including a Jewish Cemetery. Later, we wandered through the narrow alleys of countless souks (bazaars), tanneries, and remarkable Islamic architecture.
The pottery barn, fueled by environmentally correct olive pits.
Inside the market at Fez.
Some actually bought carpets...
The city from the top of the carpet shop:
The leather shop (below). Actually it's the tannery. The mint sprigs are to kill the smell of the pigeon p__p, which is used to cure the hides.
I'm not much on text, so about all you'll see are pictures. If you want explanations, e-mail Denise. She knows and sees all.
